Temple of Demeter
The Temple of Demeter was built around 530-520 BC. Demeter was the ancient goddess of agriculture accounting for the siting in this fertile valley. When Christianity took over, the Temple of Demeter was converted to a Christian basilica and a small chapel was built in the center of the temple.

Basillica
This basillica formerly occupied the center of the Temple of Demeter. In the 6th century AD, the church fell into ruins, possibly after an Arabic invasion. It was rebuilt in 1977 in a location off to one side of the Temple.

Yiota guided us around to several sites in Naxos - Naxos Trekking.

Halki Village
A typical small street in Halki. Halki has a long history and was once the capital of Naxos as well as its main administrative and trade center.

Temple of Apollo
On the islet of Palatia overlooking Hora and the entrance to the Naxos harbor stands the unfinished Temple of Apollo or Portara. Started in 530 BC it is now the island's main landmark. This is the mythological location where Dionysus abducted the Cretan princess Ariadne

Town of Hora
In the foreground is the causeway linking the islet of Palatia to the town of Hora (on the island of Naxos).

A day sailing trip from Naxos to Naoussa on Paros island
Actually motored the entire way except for a half hour of sailing on the return trip. Unfortunately, the water was cold enough that neither of us actually did any swimming.

Betsy's wondering how she could extend our vacation for a few more weeks.

Naoussa, Paros Island
We arrive at our sailing destination. Dominating the town and harbor is the Church of Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Venetian Fort - Naoussa
A small Venetian castle built at the end of the 13th century to protect the harbor and town from pirates.
